Lake Lanier Toxic Landfills ? Federal Dirt GiveAway Uncovers Cover-Up
Starboard Cove Marina on Flowery Branch Bay at Lake Lanier dredged the bay with a federal permit from the Corps of Engineers this winter. Then without federal, state or county land disturbance permits or "reseller" contracts, marina officials put up signs all over South Hall County which read, "FREE DIRT. FLOWERY BRANCH. LARGE QUANTITIES. CALL 770-965-xxxx" which was the number to the marina. Subsequently, the marina allowed hundreds of truckloads of allegedly "free" federal dirt to be removed, transported and deposited on other sites for landscaping in established neighborhoods off McEver Road (an extension of Peachtree Industrial Blvd), in Forest Knoll subdivision off Spout Springs Road, and as foundation dirt for the new Walgreen's pharmacy at the corner of Spout Springs Road at Hog Mountain Road, all in Flowery Branch, Georgia. The marina would not disclose any of the other destinations where they allowed dirt to be taken nor who they allowed to take it. Shortly thereafter, while investigating where the federal dirt had been taken, it was discovered that Wallgreen's, Habersham Bank and the daycare next to it were all built on or adjacent to land once used as an unregulated community landfill. Other unregulated landfills within the Flowery Branch area, near where numerous schools and the Atlanta Falcons training camp were built, were also discovered.
